Movie Review : Spare Parts

Spare Parts poster

One of my favorite movies is Spare Parts. Spare Parts is not a popular movie in Indonesia, because it didn’t play in Indonesian theatre. However, the value that the film bring is absolutely great and the story is really moving. The story is adapted from real story into film.
The movie told us about 4 Hispanic students at Carl Hayden Community College that joined in robotic team. They are undocumented Mexican who enter to the US illegally. They live in pressure of American Border Patrol, poverty, and danger. At the same time, Dr. Fredi Cameron, an engineer, who needs job visits Carl Hayden Community College to apply for science teacher. Later, Dr. Fredi Cameron lead the robotic club to attend NASA sponsored ROV (Remotely Underwater Vehicle) competition. In order to join the ROV competition they have to face many problems. They have to use their limited budget effectively. Not only the budget, the problem comes from each student family, and Dr. Cameron. Can they overcome the problem?
At the end of the movie, the robotic team won the 1st place in the competition.. They beat high class universities like MIT, Harvard, and Duke.
The film played by George Lopez as Dr. Fredi Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis as Ms. Karen Lowry (principal), Marisa Tomei as Gwen Kolinsky, Carlos PenaVega as Oscar Vazquez, David Del Rio as Cristian Arcega, Jose Julian as Lorenzo Santillan, and Oscar Javier Gutierrez as Luis Aranda. Even though George Lopez is a comedian, but in this movie he can act serious. All actings of the actors and actresses are good.
One thing that I regret is I feel there is something missing. It’s the transition between time that the team break because lack of confidence and the team go to the competition. The film didn’t show us how Dr. Cameron and the students solve that problem. For me it’s a big part and the key of the story.
However, overall I like this movie. It tells us about trustworthy, teamwork, confidence, and respect. For me, this movie is a must watch movie. It’s rich of moral value and suitable for motivating people.

Semester Break

The semester break has come. It’s time to do some refreshing after tiring school period. This is what I have been waiting for. This holiday I and my family went to Hong Kong. This is my second time to go abroad. We bought tickets and reserved hotel since September 2016.
We went in Thursday, December 29th 2016. We departed from Bandung at 12.30 to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Our flight was Malaysia Airlines MH 724 to Kuala Lumpur then MH 72 from KL to Hong Kong. MH 724 departed at 7.50 PM and arrived in KL at 11.50 PM local time. The MH 72 departed on December 30th 2016 at 8.40 AM and arrived at 12.30 PM both in local time (GMT+8). In Kuala Lumpur, we only transit for about 8 hours. We slept in the hotel near the airport. The we must had already in the airport again for the next flight before 7AM.
When we arrived at Hong Kong we had to claim our baggage in the baggage claim area. We brought 4 bags but only 3 were spotted but the last one was not spotted. And the bad thing it was my bag. Every clothes I prepared for this trip was stored in that bag. Found that one bag was lost so we had to complain to the Airline’s ground handling in that airport. They tried to find my bag too in all the carousels but they couldn’t find it so we had to submit formal enquiry about the lost bag. Until now the bag is still lost.
The first day in HK we rest in Hotel that we had booked and walked around there. We stayed in Happy Valley area. It was a developed area in Hong Kong so it was crowded. The popular attraction there is a mall named “Times Square”. Around that area there were many high-rise building that had screens for ads.  Hong Kong’s Time Square maybe similar to the Times Square in New York City but not as big as New York’s. HK’s Times Square is an expensive mall. A lot of famous brands opened stores there. One of the reasons why we went there is to buy my clothes. We walked around the mall and found that the clothes there were expensive, especially in December because it’s winter there (no snow but low temperatures 16°-23°C in December), that made the clothes must be thick. When we looked clothes at Zara we found that the price was cheap enough compared to other stores there, so we bought 3 t-shirts there for HK$ 69 each.
The second day we went to Hong Kong’s Disneyland. It was my first experience to visit Disneyland. I’ve visited Universal Studios before and I wanted to compare Disneyland and Universal Studios. The attractions in Disneyland were intended for children while the Universal Studios for teenager and above. So they have two different markets. At first, I think that the rides were boring even if I compared it to Dufan. But then I found the interesting things at Disneyland. It was the performance. Both Dufan and Universal Studios don’t offer any interesting parade and stage show. I advise you to attend parades and shows because it was very interesting. The show was similar to Broadway. At that time the show was The Festival of The Lion King. It was very splendid because it was my first time I watched musical drama with great quality.
The third day we went to Madame Tussauds. The location of Madame Tussauds is quite far from Happy Valley. It is located at The Peak. The Peak is the highest point in Hong Kong. There we took photographs with a lot of celebrities, politician, athletes, and influential persons. When we visited Madame Tussauds there were a lot of Indonesian there. Probably there were more Indonesian rather than the Hong Kong people. In Madame Tussauds I took photograph with Soekarno, Albert Einstein, Iron Man, and Barack Obama. Our visit in Madame Tussauds were really short, less than 1 hour, because there we only took photographs.

After visited Madame Tussauds we went to Ladies Market. Ladies Market is a famous street market in Hong Kong. It was located in Mong Kok. To go there we just need to took the MTR, then left the train in Mong Kok station, then took exit E2 for the shortest route. Ladies Market was very popular for its cheap price and for bargain. I liked to shop there because I could get the best price or the price that we want. For some products you could bargain it to really cheap price. I don’t know if I was a good bargainer or the first offered price was too expensive, but I once buy fridge magnet for HK$60 for 2 packs with 6 magnets each. The seller offered HK$60 per pack but I didn’t want to buy it if the price is HK$60 so I told her that I would buy it HK$60 for 2 so I pretended to leave her stall, then she gave it. So the best technique to do a bargain is just pretend that you want to leave the stall. After spent some hours in Ladies Market then we went to hotel. We brought many things that we wanted to give to our relatives or friend.
The fourth day we went to Hong Kong Science Museum. There were Hong Kong Space Museum and Hong Kong Science Museum, they were both two different museums and separated. Hong Kong Space Museum was nearer from the Tsim Sha Tsui East MRT Station, but its exhibition hall was closed for renovation, so we went to Hong Kong Science Museum. It was farther from the TST East MRT Station. The Hong Kong Science Museum entrance ticket was cheap and it was free for students who brought their Student Card. My sister could enter the Science Museum for free even she didn’t bring her Student Card. For submission fees, you can get the information at . The Hong Kong Science Museum was really interesting for me. There were some exhibition halls intended for different things, Electricity, Transport, Technology, Biology. The Museum consisted of 3 floors. I’ve explored the second (main floor) and the third floor, but I didn’t have enough time to explore the first floor because my parents and my sister didn’t want to walk anymore, they were tired. Then we went back to hotel.
We rested in the hotel for some hours then we went to Times Square. Actually we visited Times Square every day, because it was the nearest mall to our hotel. But, that night we didn’t only visited Times Square Mall but another stores outside the mall that surrounded it. My mom wanted to buy Fossil bag so we walked to the Fossil stores. While walked to the Fossil store I realized that the area was an expensive area. It was the first part of Hong Kong that developed. After visited some stores and ate dinner we went back to the hotel.
The fifth day is the last day in Hong Kong. We went to the nearest street market from our hotel. It was Jardine Crescent. Jardine Crescent location was very strategic, near the center of attraction in Happy Valley, but the seller was really fewer than the Ladies Market. After bought some things there, then we went back to our hotel to picked up our bags then we went to airport.

Our flight was similar to the departure flight. We went to Kuala Lumpur first by Cathay Pacific, then went back to Jakarta with Malaysia Airlines. Then we went back to Bandung by Jackal Holiday Shuttle. We were really tired when we arrived home. Even though I tired I was very happy that I could go to Hong Kong for holiday. Thanks God.

Soon, the service started to attract members from all over the world. By October 1999, the company had raised $5 million from Goldman Sachs and $20 million from SoftBank, a Japanese telecom company that also invests in technology companies. Ma wanted to improve the global e-commerce system and from 2003 he founded Taobao Marketplace, Alipay, Ali Mama and Lynx. After the rapid rise of Taobao, eBay offered to purchase the company. However, Ma rejected their offer, instead garnering support from Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang with a $1 billion investment. Even though Jack Ma has been a rich person he still wanted to learn something in the university. He enrolled at Beijing-based Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) and graduated in 2006.
In 2013 Ma stepped down his position as CEO and became Executive Chairman. Alibaba went public in 19th September with a value of US $150 billion. It was the largest offerinf for US-listed company in the history of New York Stock Exchange. It made Jack Ma  the richest man in China with estimated worth of US $25 billion.
Even though Ma has been the richest man in China, he is still kind. He hoped all his employees to be a kind and happy people that wanted to help others. Ma’s friend said that even the IPO (Initial Public Offering) made Ma rich his lifestyle didn’t change. Ma kept his family out of the spotlight. The Little Match Girl

The Little Match Girl
by Hans Christian Andersen
Most terribly cold it was; it snowed, and was nearly quite dark, and evening-- the last evening of the year. In this cold and darkness there went along the street a poor little girl, bareheaded, and with naked feet. When she left home she had slippers on, it is true; but what was the good of that? They were very large slippers, which her mother had hitherto worn; so large were they; and the poor little thing lost them as she scuffled away across the street, because of two carriages that rolled by dreadfully fast.
One slipper was nowhere to be found; the other had been laid hold of by an urchin, and off he ran with it; he thought it would do capitally for a cradle when he some day or other should have children himself. So the little maiden walked on with her tiny naked feet, that were quite red and blue from cold. She carried a quantity of matches in an old apron, and she held a bundle of them in her hand. Nobody had bought anything of her the whole livelong day; no one had given her a single farthing.
She crept along trembling with cold and hunger--a very picture of sorrow, the poor little thing!
The flakes of snow covered her long fair hair, which fell in beautiful curls around her neck; but of that, of course, she never once now thought. From all the windows the candles were gleaming, and it smelt so deliciously of roast goose, for you know it was New Year's Eve; yes, of that she thought.
In a corner formed by two houses, of which one advanced more than the other, she seated herself down and cowered together. Her little feet she had drawn close up to her, but she grew colder and colder, and to go home she did not venture, for she had not sold any matches and could not bring a farthing of money: from her father she would certainly get blows, and at home it was cold too, for above her she had only the roof, through which the wind whistled, even though the largest cracks were stopped up with straw and rags.
Her little hands were almost numbed with cold. Oh! a match might afford her a world of comfort, if she only dared take a single one out of the bundle, draw it against the wall, and warm her fingers by it. She drew one out. "Rischt!" how it blazed, how it burnt! It was a warm, bright flame, like a candle, as she held her hands over it: it was a wonderful light. It seemed really to the little maiden as though she were sitting before a large iron stove, with burnished brass feet and a brass ornament at top. The fire burned with such blessed influence; it warmed so delightfully. The little girl had already stretched out her feet to warm them too; but--the small flame went out, the stove vanished: she had only the remains of the burnt-out match in her hand.
She rubbed another against the wall: it burned brightly, and where the light fell on the wall, there the wall became transparent like a veil, so that she could see into the room. On the table was spread a snow-white tablecloth; upon it was a splendid porcelain service, and the roast goose was steaming famously with its stuffing of apple and dried plums. And what was still more capital to behold was, the goose hopped down from the dish, reeled about on the floor with knife and fork in its breast, till it came up to the poor little girl; when--the match went out and nothing but the thick, cold, damp wall was left behind. She lighted another match. Now there she was sitting under the most magnificent Christmas tree: it was still larger, and more decorated than the one which she had seen through the glass door in the rich merchant's house.
Thousands of lights were burning on the green branches, and gaily-colored pictures, such as she had seen in the shop-windows, looked down upon her. The little maiden stretched out her hands towards them when--the match went out. The lights of the Christmas tree rose higher and higher, she saw them now as stars in heaven; one fell down and formed a long trail of fire.
"Someone is just dead!" said the little girl; for her old grandmother, the only person who had loved her, and who was now no more, had told her, that when a star falls, a soul ascends to God.
She drew another match against the wall: it was again light, and in the lustre there stood the old grandmother, so bright and radiant, so mild, and with such an expression of love.
"Grandmother!" cried the little one. "Oh, take me with you! You go away when the match burns out; you vanish like the warm stove, like the delicious roast goose, and like the magnificent Christmas tree!" And she rubbed the whole bundle of matches quickly against the wall, for she wanted to be quite sure of keeping her grandmother near her. And the matches gave such a brilliant light that it was brighter than at noon-day: never formerly had the grandmother been so beautiful and so tall. She took the little maiden, on her arm, and both flew in brightness and in joy so high, so very high, and then above was neither cold, nor hunger, nor anxiety--they were with God.

But in the corner, at the cold hour of dawn, sat the poor girl, with rosy cheeks and with a smiling mouth, leaning against the wall--frozen to death on the last evening of the old year. Stiff and stark sat the child there with her matches, of which one bundle had been burnt. "She wanted to warm herself," people said. No one had the slightest suspicion of what beautiful things she had seen; no one even dreamed of the splendor in which, with her grandmother she had entered on the joys of a new year.
