Movie Review : Spare Parts

Spare Parts poster

One of my favorite movies is Spare Parts. Spare Parts is not a popular movie in Indonesia, because it didn’t play in Indonesian theatre. However, the value that the film bring is absolutely great and the story is really moving. The story is adapted from real story into film.
The movie told us about 4 Hispanic students at Carl Hayden Community College that joined in robotic team. They are undocumented Mexican who enter to the US illegally. They live in pressure of American Border Patrol, poverty, and danger. At the same time, Dr. Fredi Cameron, an engineer, who needs job visits Carl Hayden Community College to apply for science teacher. Later, Dr. Fredi Cameron lead the robotic club to attend NASA sponsored ROV (Remotely Underwater Vehicle) competition. In order to join the ROV competition they have to face many problems. They have to use their limited budget effectively. Not only the budget, the problem comes from each student family, and Dr. Cameron. Can they overcome the problem?
At the end of the movie, the robotic team won the 1st place in the competition.. They beat high class universities like MIT, Harvard, and Duke.
The film played by George Lopez as Dr. Fredi Cameron, Jamie Lee Curtis as Ms. Karen Lowry (principal), Marisa Tomei as Gwen Kolinsky, Carlos PenaVega as Oscar Vazquez, David Del Rio as Cristian Arcega, Jose Julian as Lorenzo Santillan, and Oscar Javier Gutierrez as Luis Aranda. Even though George Lopez is a comedian, but in this movie he can act serious. All actings of the actors and actresses are good.
One thing that I regret is I feel there is something missing. It’s the transition between time that the team break because lack of confidence and the team go to the competition. The film didn’t show us how Dr. Cameron and the students solve that problem. For me it’s a big part and the key of the story.
However, overall I like this movie. It tells us about trustworthy, teamwork, confidence, and respect. For me, this movie is a must watch movie. It’s rich of moral value and suitable for motivating people.
